Blocking more Spam by using Message Scan Delay

Before you Begin

Determine if you are running SpamSentinel in a Standard or a Checking Machine configuration

Background Information

The Message Scan Delay feature enables SpamSentinel for Domino to catch more spam by introducing a short delay between the time a message is received and when it is actually checked for spam. The global anti-spam databases accessed by SpamSentinel are continuously getting updated with new information about the very latest spam attacks. We recommend 120 seconds to start. Since we scan each message in real time, when a new outbreak is detected globally it can take up to 120 seconds for the fingerprint of the message to be scored as spam. Delaying the scanning of the message greatly improves accuracy.

Procedure

This configuration option is found in the SpamSentinel Server Configuration document in the SpamSentinel Administration database. It is located on the tab 'Advanced' in the sub-tab 'Spam Processing'. Legal values are between 0 and 600.

Unlike most other SpamSentinel configuration settings, changes to the Message Scan Delay requires that the SpamSentinel Scanner windows service gets re-started after the Server Configuration document is saved.

  • For Standard installations, the SpamSentinel Scanner service is found on the same server where Domino is installed.
  • For Checking Machine installations, the SpamSentinel Scanner service is found on the Checking Machine.
